HOW TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE DURING THE SUMMER AS A SINGLE PERSON

HOW TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE DURING THE SUMMER AS A SINGLE PERSON Summer can be one of the toughest times to be single.   There’s nothing worse than looking at Instagram or Facebook and seeing your married/couple friends off on vacation in the South of France or spending the weekend at a BBQ in the Hamptons while you stare longingly at your dog in your cramped apartment wishing your fire escape could morph into the Caribbean Sea or a gondola in Venice. If you haven’t met Mr. or Ms. Right by Memorial Day Weekend how can you salvage your summer? Is there no hope if youre single in summer? Dont Let Fear Limit Your Career Potential - CareerAlley

Dont Let Fear Limit Your Career Potential - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Fear: it can be your biggest barrier to success. Fear can keep you in your comfort zone, stop you from going after your hearts desire, and place limits on your life. For the sake of this article, we are applying this to your career potential. Consider the following fears, each one of which could stop you from achieving your career dreams. Image by Pete Linforth from Pixabay The fear of sharing your weaknesses You know youre not perfect, but your pride might hold you back from letting others know about the areas you are weakest in. You might be afraid of what they will think of you, so you plod on within your career, never advancing because you stay rooted within your limited skill set. You might then get passed over for promotion within your career. However, if you had the courage to speak to your boss about training possibilities, or if you had asked a colleague for help, the reality may have been very different. Fear: it can be your biggest barrier to success. Fear can keep you in your comfort zone, stop you from going after your heart's desire, and place limits on your life. Tweet This The fear of returning to work after a career break Many women (and men) often take a career break for family reasons, perhaps because of maternity leave or to spend longer time at home caring for their childrens needs. According to this article, many people then fear returning to work because they are afraid the workplace has moved on too much and because their skills have become irrelevant. However, this fear can be alleviated. If youre on a career break, you should ensure your time at home is wisely spent. Getting back out in the career field after a break is not uncommon. Reasons can be pursuing higher education to learn new skills, becoming a carer for a family member or to start a family of your own. Making the decision to get back into work can be daunting but it doesnt need to be. Getting Back On The Career Ladder You might want to run a small business from home, for example, not only to raise your income while youre away from work but to build on skills that might be relevant to the career you are looking to get into or return to. You might also want to take on professional qualifications appropriate to your career, many of which, such as these Grand Canyon University nursing courses for those in healthcare, can be taken part-time and in some cases, online. You can then sharpen your skills without losing your competitive edge when you later interview for roles in your profession. You should also stay in touch with previous employers and colleagues, as by staying on their radar, you might find a route to return to your previous workplace. Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay The fear of asking for a promotion If you know you deserve a promotion, then you are in your right to ask. While your employer should have picked up on your talents already, sometimes the onus needs to be on you to remind them. But if youre afraid of knocking on your bosses door, perhaps because you already fear him or her, or because you fear your request will be rejected, then that promotion might never be yours. Therefore, you need to pluck up the courage. There are some useful tips here on asking for a promotion, and there is plenty of advice online about speaking to difficult bosses, so do a little research. That one conversation could make all the difference to your career, so despite your trepidation, think of the positive outcome that might prevail. Finally So, is fear limiting your career potential? 5 Top Mistakes to Avoid in Your Career Reinvention - Kathy Caprino

5 Top Mistakes to Avoid in Your Career Reinvention After spending nine years reinventing myself from a miserable and chronically ill corporate VP to womens career and executive coach, marketing consultant, author, speaker and womens work-life expert, Ive made a good number of huge mistakes and missteps that have tripped me up, and at times, caused me to hang my head in my hands in despair.   I consciously avoid spending time in regret, but these mistakes were gruelling.   Yet I do believe that each and every one of these lessons has made me stronger, more expansive, more connected to who I really am, and ultimately more confident in my abilities to direct my life with satisfaction and joy.   To help others learn from my mistakes, Ive launched a new social media series called My 52 Mistakes, to share my top mistakes in life and work, and help others bypass the major pitfalls I encountered.   Heres my list of my top 52.   Check it out and share your lessons!! Here are the top five mistakes to avoid when in career transition and embarking on professional reinvention.   Ive lived through these mistakes myself, and am stronger for itbut you dont have to! Mistake #1: Dont have a build it and they will come mentality without utilizing powerful financial, professional, and business-building tactics and strategies Dont make the mistake of confusing wishful thinking with powerful strategies for moving forward.   Certainly, faith and optimism are essential, but so are sound business and professional goals, plans and tactics, developed with deep know-how and expertise (your own or a great consulting partner), fueled by conscious intention and fierce commitment.   There are 5 Ms required for entrepreneurial success ignore these at your peril.  Mistake #2: Dont underestimate how long it will take you to build a successful new career Leave your ego at the door when youre evaluating how long reinvention will take.   Get advice from true experts in the field on the amount of time it will take to launch your new career, and make it successful and earn you a good living (thats what you want, after all, isnt it?).   Its been said that becoming an expert in a field takes 10 years (I believe thats true), and creating a self-sustaining small business or consulting practice often takes at least five years. Mistake #3: Dont neglect having a Plan B, and moving to it when its time In my book Breakdown, Breakthrough, I talk about what it takes to reinvent yourself.   Often it requires that you simply refuse to let in (mentally, emotionally, or spiritually) the possibility that you will fail (see Chapter 11 about the amazing comedian Monique Marvezs journey to hell and back).   If you want something badly enough, most likely youll find a way to get it.   However, if you have a family to support, and other critical financial and other obligations that you feel you must fulfill in life, then you need a Plan B that will get you through the tough financial times.   Use Plan B to help you stay afloat while all along moving forward to your career dreams. Mistake #4 Dont wait too long to correct your course when you misstep or discover steps on your new path that are wrong for you Set milestones (I will achieve this by this date, etc.), and review your progess frequently quarterly at the least.     If youre way off course, you need to course-correct.   Also, if where youre going ends up feeling wrong, dont keep going in the same direction.   Dont make yourself wrong for how you feel.    Realize a change is necessary, and power up to make that change, and dont wait until disaster strikes to make the correction. Mistake #5 Dont forget: A fantastic life takes fantastic risks Theres an enormous difference between a job and a calling.   Neither is better or worse it simply depends on what you want for your life, based on your values and priorities.   If its a calling youve be given  to follow (a calling is not a voluntary pursuit, Ive found), know now that it will require everything youve got to give, and then some.   Please dont expect a fantastic life without understanding that you must risk a great deal to live your life on the cutting edge of experience.  Other lessons Ive learned through my nine-year reinvention: 1.There will be times (many, in fact) that you have no idea what to do, and despite all your efforts, you fail at the task at hand 2. If you dont remain teachable at all times, youll suffer 3. If you think youre immune (to anything the economy, challenges in the workplace, problems in building your business to a satisfactory level), youre wrong 4. When you lose your compassion for others who are challenged in their reinvention or in their efforts to launch themselves successfully, youll suddenly experience something that brings you back to humility 5. Youll need faith, patience, and perseverance in greater supply than you ever thought possible 6. Its not all up to you things happen outside your sphere of influence that can shift your course 7. Reaching out for help is essential when youre not where you want to be 8. Being part of a like-minded community that offers support, guidance, and encouragement is a blessing and a good business strategy 9. Career reinventing is a life-long process (not a one-time deal), and once you embark on it, it changes you forever.   Its a process that leads you to feel so appreciative of all that you are flaws, gifts, strengths, blindspots and all and so excited for each new day that brings you closer to yourself. 10. Reinvention is not for the faint of heart, but oh myif youre up for it, what gifts it brings. What are the biggest mistakes youve made in reinventing your career?   Id love to hear.   Share your insights with us! We all learn from each other. Wishing you  a joyful  career reinvention!   And let me know if youd like some help Ive been there.

Why you should have a personal website -

Why you should have a personal website - How can you stand out in a competitive market? Whether you want to look for a job or youre planning to start your own business, making a good first impression is key. People will turn to Google and online tools to help them form first impressions of you. When you apply for positions or vie for opportunities, it’s likely someone will check you out online before considering to invite you to an interview. That can be good or bad news, depending on what that person finds! The good news is you can influence what people find when they search for you online. One way is to create a stream of professional content via social media tools, such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus. Using these tools is free, does not require a lot of technical skill and, once you understand social media basics, makes it easy to showcase your information. Get my free white paper:  5 Mistakes Preventing You From Landing a Job This Week   One additional strategy many job seekers overlook is building and  maintaining a personal website, also known as a “social résumé.” Domain.ME  â€" provider of the .me domain extension â€"  conducted a survey  of 600 professionals who own their own websites. Eighty-four percent of respondents reported receiving tangible career benefits from their personal website. A  Forbes article, when referencing Workfolio,  noted  that “56 percent of all hiring managers are more impressed by a candidate’s personal website than any other personal branding tool  â€"  however, only 7 percent of job seekers actually have a personal website.” How can having your own website help your career? Predrag Lesic, CEO of Domain.ME, offers these insights: 1. It helps you clarify your brand.  Can you think of a brand you respect that does not have a website? Would you hire a service provider who didn’t have a  strong online presence? “Today, a web presence is a measure of credibility and a powerful tool for communicating what you are all about to your target audiences, Lesic says. While it may seem unusual to consider yourself a commodity, as a job seeker, you are marketing yourself to meet a need. Like every good brand, your personal brand should live online. 2. It gets you noticed.  In the Domain.Me survey, 70 percent reported believing that employers review their online presence prior to an interview. In fact, a 2014 Jobvite survey of human resources professionals  reveals that 93 percent of recruiters will review a candidate’s social media profile before making a decision, and that candidate information found on the Web influences their hiring decisions. “As employers increasingly turn to the Internet to identify and research potential candidates, you want to be searchable. Your Facebook page may entertain family members and friends, but it isn’t designed to highlight your strengths as a job candidate. Conversely, your LinkedIn profile, while providing professional credentials, can be dry and impersonal, Lesic says.  Not only is your website a fully customizable platform to showcase your personal brand, the savvy you demonstrate in owning your Web real estate and building a site can impress potential employers.” Creating this online real estate  is not difficult, and there are various ways to accomplish it. One way is via “hosted” sites, such as About.me or Flavors.me, which allow you to design your own landing page on their directories. These options result in an online presence, but the URL will not be in your name only. If you want to own a memorable, personalized domain, you can purchase an address using any of the major domain registrars. Lesic explains: “With .com availability dwindling, a popular choice for personal websites is the .ME extension.” Once you own a domain of your choice â€" ideally, YourName.com or YourName.me  â€"  you can turn to various tools to populate and publish the site, such as WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or Jigsy. 3. It’s more than a  résumé.  In Domain.ME’s survey, respondents were asked which is more important for long-term career success: a personal website or a  résumé. The majority (63 percent) favored websites. “A website is interactive, evolving and dynamic,  Lesic says.  Your portfolio, writing samples, testimonials,  images and more add color to your professional history. And your site’s design aesthetic and tone of voice help to convey your personal brand. 4. It networks for you.  While  in-person networking  isn’t going out of style, digital networking can help make the job a lot easier. More than half of survey respondents  believe their personal sites help them achieve professional recognition, connect them with a network of like-minded professionals and attract new  customers. “Your website never sleeps or takes a day off, Lesic says. It makes you accessible to an enormous audience and invites people to engage with your content and to contact you.” Originally appeared on U.S. News World Report.
