3 Simple Ways To Look After Your Mental Health

3 Simple Ways To Look After Your Mental Health If you look back a decade, mental health had a stigma attached to it. Those people who suffered from anxiety, stress and bouts of depression were seen as somehow weak. This was even more pronounced if you happened to be male. Fast forward ten years, and the outlook and views on mental well being are changing, and rightly so. Mental health is being seen as just as important as physical well being. Depression and anxiety are illnesses that need medical intervention as much as a broken leg or a nasty bout of food poisoning. You need to learn to listen to your mind as well as your body, and consider how you will look after your mental health.  Talk  The most important aspect of our mental well being is our ability to share our problems. Becoming isolated and feeling alone does nothing but feed a stress related illness. Instead, you need to call a friend, visit your parents or call a helpline to vent, rant and cry. Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on sometimes, so it’s vital that you find yours. Going to the doctor isn’t admitting defeat, it’s being courageous in recognising that you have a problem that needs solving. For those who rely on alcohol as a crutch to cope with their depression, a stint in rehab may help. For those who struggle with stress or PTSD, pills may not be prescribed. You might be advised to look into mindfulness or yoga as an alternative.  Mindfulness  Mindfulness is a way of reprogramming your thought process. Instead of constantly worrying about the future, the negative things that may occur and stressing about things that might never happen in the first place, you learn to live more in the moment. Yes, worrying thought may come into your head, but you learn to accept them and think about something more positive. A mindfulness course, prescribed by your doctor, may last eight to ten sessions, by the end of which you’ll be armed with a variety of new ways to banish negative thoughts. Coupled with yoga, you can learn a range of breathing techniques and a physical exercise that can help you destress and feel lighter and healthier.  Do Something New  They often say that a change is as good as a rest. For many people, doing something new and different can give them a boost and help give them something to look forward to. Sometimes, breaking the monotony of life can empower us to feel more alive. It might be time to have a go at that cake decorating class you’ve always had your eye on.   Or you might want to give that free martial arts taster session a go, or perhaps you will start learning the piano after all. It doesnt matter what this new activity is, the fact that you’re willing to give something new a go, get out there, meet new people and change up your free time, shows that you are being proactive and that you want to get out of your rut.  Having imperfect mental health can affect anyone at any time. It is how you deal with it that matters. Follow this guide and look after your mental well being.

Book Excerpt What the jargon you use reveals about you

Book Excerpt What the jargon you use reveals about you My book, Brazen Careerist: The New Rules for Success, is shipping from Amazon! Buy it there now. Or buy the book in local book stores starting on May 25. Here is tip #26 from the book: Leverage Your Core Competencies by Off-Loading Jargon Dont use jargon. I know youve heard this rule before, but maybe no one has ever told you the real reason for the rule. You lose your authenticity when you reach for cliched phrases, and your choice of jargon reveals your weakness. Today business writing is mired in cliche. Its very stiff, striving to impress. Its not honest: Heres who I am, says Tim Schellhardt, former bureau chief at The Wall Street Journal and now a public relations executive. Phrases like leverage your core competencies spread through corporate life because the pressure to conform at work can be intense. Once you hear other people using the jargon, its easy to use it yourself. The result is an environment in which no voice stands out as authentic, according to the authors of, Why Business People Speak Like Idiots: A Bullfighters Guide. Theres also jargon that goes across most industries. The phrases you hear whether youre an accountant in consumer products or a programmer in health care. Most people understand this jargon, but using it makes you look bad because most cross-industry jargon is a euphemism for being desperate or incompetent or calling someone else desperate or incompetent. Here are some examples: Lets think out of the box. Really means, Can you creatively anemic people please come up with something? People who really do think out of the box do it whether they are told to or not. Thats how they think. If you feel like you need to tell someone to think out of the box, then its probably hopeless. The person who says, Lets think out of the box is usually desperate for a new idea and surrounded by people who are not known for generating ideas. So the phrase is actually an announcement that says, Im in trouble. I need someone who can hit the ground running. Really means, I am screwed. Because no one can hit the ground running. You need to at least assess what race youre in and who else is running. Everyone has a race strategy when they are in the blocks. You need a little time to get one. In the case of a new hire this means taking some time to assess company politics. If your employer needs you to hit the ground running then youve already missed your window to achieve success. Lets hit a home run: Im desperate to look good. Even though the odds of a home run are slim, Im banking on one because its the only thing thatll save me. Something for all your sports fans to remember: If you have a bunch of solid hitters you dont need a bunch of home runs. You and I are not on the same page. Get on my page. Your page is misguided. No one ever says, Were not on the same page, so let me work really hard to understand your point of view. If you want to understand someone else, you say, Can you tell me more about how youre thinking. Im calling to touch base. I want something from you but I cant say it up front. Or I am worried that you are lost and Im sniffing around for signs to confirm my hunch. Or Im calling because you micromanage me. My plate is full: Help Im drowning, or I would kill myself before Id work on your project. Lets close the loop. Let me make sure Im not going to get into trouble for this one. Lets touch base next week: I dont want to talk to you now, or You are on a short leash and you need to report back to me. Keep this on your radar. This will come back to bite you or me. I sent this list to Peter Degen-Portnoy, inventor and president of Innovatium, and he pointed out one I missed: Were not communicating well means I dont like you. I have never met Peter in person. But he sends me smart and soul-searching emails that reveal an authenticity that makes me feel like were friends. He never uses jargon, at least with me. So I like him. Those of you who strive to be authentic every day of your life will not be derailed by jargon. To people who are connected to their work and their co-workers, jargon will not feel appropriate so youll rarely use it. Use jargon as a sign that you are disconnected to whatever is going on that is related to the jargon. If you treat the disconnectedness, and reestablish authenticity, the jargon will go away. HOW TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE DURING THE SUMMER AS A SINGLE PERSON

HOW TO SURVIVE AND THRIVE DURING THE SUMMER AS A SINGLE PERSON Summer can be one of the toughest times to be single.   There’s nothing worse than looking at Instagram or Facebook and seeing your married/couple friends off on vacation in the South of France or spending the weekend at a BBQ in the Hamptons while you stare longingly at your dog in your cramped apartment wishing your fire escape could morph into the Caribbean Sea or a gondola in Venice. If you haven’t met Mr. or Ms. Right by Memorial Day Weekend how can you salvage your summer? Is there no hope if youre single in summer? Dr. Sanam Hafeez is a Neuropsychologist who also happens to be a single mom of two boys.  This is no trivial matter. Loneliness can literally be a killer! It can lead to depression, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, and other destructive behaviors.  Here she shares some ideas to socialize without a significant other during the dog days of summer. Take A Daycation There is something called  www.resortpass.com. While this is not yet available in every city, it does allow people to book day passes at luxury hotels and use their beach, pool, spa, and amenity facilities in some cases for as little as $25.00 per day!   Hotels such as Kimpton, W, Westin, Hyatt, Ritz Carlton, St. Regis and many others offer this. Don’t Let Being Single Ground You or De-Rail Your Travel Let’s face it, unless you are an extraordinarily confident and independent person, it can be unsettling to travel solo to a foreign country and eat meals alone and wander around with nobody to converse with. This need not be the case! There are many travel groups that build their business around single travelers who are more mature than Club Med. Once such company is  https://www.singlestravelintl.com   Their vacations run the gamut from weekends, cruises, adventure travel, and international travel. And they are just one of many companies who do this. Volunteer What do you like? Pets? Art? Kids? Try any place where they can be found, like a shelter, museum or hospital. It really gives you a boost to give unconditionally. Find an Extra Job Doing Something You Really Enjoy Only do so if it won’t add unwanted stress to your life.    Look up freelance opportunities in your area doing what youre skilled at. The extra income will make you feel better and give you more cash to spoil yourself. Swap Your Home/Apt With a Friend Temporarily It beats the cost of a hotel and can certainly get you out of a rut and in front of new people! Perhaps, you’re a woman living in New York and are not feeling it with the men in the big apple. Maybe you have a friend in LA  you can swap homes with to see how you vibe with the pace and the people on the west coast. It gives you a chance to feel things out without making a long-term commitment. Single in Summer?   Its Okay! “The bottom line,” says Dr. Hafeez, “is that with some well thought out planning, you need not be single and lonely during the summer months. You can fill your time with people, sun, fun, adventures, new cultures, and in the process of doing so, you just might find “the one.” This guest post was provided by Dr Sanam Hafeez Dr. Sanam  Hafeez  is a New York City based Neuro-psychologist and School Psychologist.   She is also the founder and director of  Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services, P.C.   She is currently a teaching faculty member at Columbia University.   Dr.  Hafeez  graduated from Queens College, CUNY with a BA in psychology.   She then went on to earn her Master of Science in Psychology at Hofstra University.   Following that she stayed at Hofstra to receive her Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) Dont Let Fear Limit Your Career Potential - CareerAlley

Dont Let Fear Limit Your Career Potential - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Fear: it can be your biggest barrier to success. Fear can keep you in your comfort zone, stop you from going after your hearts desire, and place limits on your life. For the sake of this article, we are applying this to your career potential. Consider the following fears, each one of which could stop you from achieving your career dreams. Image by Pete Linforth from Pixabay The fear of sharing your weaknesses You know youre not perfect, but your pride might hold you back from letting others know about the areas you are weakest in. You might be afraid of what they will think of you, so you plod on within your career, never advancing because you stay rooted within your limited skill set. You might then get passed over for promotion within your career. However, if you had the courage to speak to your boss about training possibilities, or if you had asked a colleague for help, the reality may have been very different. Fear: it can be your biggest barrier to success. Fear can keep you in your comfort zone, stop you from going after your heart's desire, and place limits on your life. Tweet This The fear of returning to work after a career break Many women (and men) often take a career break for family reasons, perhaps because of maternity leave or to spend longer time at home caring for their childrens needs. According to this article, many people then fear returning to work because they are afraid the workplace has moved on too much and because their skills have become irrelevant. However, this fear can be alleviated. If youre on a career break, you should ensure your time at home is wisely spent. Getting back out in the career field after a break is not uncommon. Reasons can be pursuing higher education to learn new skills, becoming a carer for a family member or to start a family of your own. Making the decision to get back into work can be daunting but it doesnt need to be. Getting Back On The Career Ladder You might want to run a small business from home, for example, not only to raise your income while youre away from work but to build on skills that might be relevant to the career you are looking to get into or return to. You might also want to take on professional qualifications appropriate to your career, many of which, such as these Grand Canyon University nursing courses for those in healthcare, can be taken part-time and in some cases, online. You can then sharpen your skills without losing your competitive edge when you later interview for roles in your profession. You should also stay in touch with previous employers and colleagues, as by staying on their radar, you might find a route to return to your previous workplace. Image by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay The fear of asking for a promotion If you know you deserve a promotion, then you are in your right to ask. While your employer should have picked up on your talents already, sometimes the onus needs to be on you to remind them. But if youre afraid of knocking on your bosses door, perhaps because you already fear him or her, or because you fear your request will be rejected, then that promotion might never be yours. Therefore, you need to pluck up the courage. There are some useful tips here on asking for a promotion, and there is plenty of advice online about speaking to difficult bosses, so do a little research. That one conversation could make all the difference to your career, so despite your trepidation, think of the positive outcome that might prevail. Finally So, is fear limiting your career potential? It very well might be if what we have suggested today relates to your life. But despite your fears, know that your future may be brighter if you can power through them, with greater financial and personal rewards. 5 Top Mistakes to Avoid in Your Career Reinvention - Kathy Caprino

5 Top Mistakes to Avoid in Your Career Reinvention After spending nine years reinventing myself from a miserable and chronically ill corporate VP to womens career and executive coach, marketing consultant, author, speaker and womens work-life expert, Ive made a good number of huge mistakes and missteps that have tripped me up, and at times, caused me to hang my head in my hands in despair.   I consciously avoid spending time in regret, but these mistakes were gruelling.   Yet I do believe that each and every one of these lessons has made me stronger, more expansive, more connected to who I really am, and ultimately more confident in my abilities to direct my life with satisfaction and joy.   To help others learn from my mistakes, Ive launched a new social media series called My 52 Mistakes, to share my top mistakes in life and work, and help others bypass the major pitfalls I encountered.   Heres my list of my top 52.   Check it out and share your lessons!! Here are the top five mistakes to avoid when in career transition and embarking on professional reinvention.   Ive lived through these mistakes myself, and am stronger for itbut you dont have to! Mistake #1: Dont have a build it and they will come mentality without utilizing powerful financial, professional, and business-building tactics and strategies Dont make the mistake of confusing wishful thinking with powerful strategies for moving forward.   Certainly, faith and optimism are essential, but so are sound business and professional goals, plans and tactics, developed with deep know-how and expertise (your own or a great consulting partner), fueled by conscious intention and fierce commitment.   There are 5 Ms required for entrepreneurial success ignore these at your peril.  Mistake #2: Dont underestimate how long it will take you to build a successful new career Leave your ego at the door when youre evaluating how long reinvention will take.   Get advice from true experts in the field on the amount of time it will take to launch your new career, and make it successful and earn you a good living (thats what you want, after all, isnt it?).   Its been said that becoming an expert in a field takes 10 years (I believe thats true), and creating a self-sustaining small business or consulting practice often takes at least five years. Mistake #3: Dont neglect having a Plan B, and moving to it when its time In my book Breakdown, Breakthrough, I talk about what it takes to reinvent yourself.   Often it requires that you simply refuse to let in (mentally, emotionally, or spiritually) the possibility that you will fail (see Chapter 11 about the amazing comedian Monique Marvezs journey to hell and back).   If you want something badly enough, most likely youll find a way to get it.   However, if you have a family to support, and other critical financial and other obligations that you feel you must fulfill in life, then you need a Plan B that will get you through the tough financial times.   Use Plan B to help you stay afloat while all along moving forward to your career dreams. Mistake #4 Dont wait too long to correct your course when you misstep or discover steps on your new path that are wrong for you Set milestones (I will achieve this by this date, etc.), and review your progess frequently quarterly at the least.     If youre way off course, you need to course-correct.   Also, if where youre going ends up feeling wrong, dont keep going in the same direction.   Dont make yourself wrong for how you feel.    Realize a change is necessary, and power up to make that change, and dont wait until disaster strikes to make the correction. Mistake #5 Dont forget: A fantastic life takes fantastic risks Theres an enormous difference between a job and a calling.   Neither is better or worse it simply depends on what you want for your life, based on your values and priorities.   If its a calling youve be given  to follow (a calling is not a voluntary pursuit, Ive found), know now that it will require everything youve got to give, and then some.   Please dont expect a fantastic life without understanding that you must risk a great deal to live your life on the cutting edge of experience.  Other lessons Ive learned through my nine-year reinvention: 1.There will be times (many, in fact) that you have no idea what to do, and despite all your efforts, you fail at the task at hand 2. If you dont remain teachable at all times, youll suffer 3. If you think youre immune (to anything the economy, challenges in the workplace, problems in building your business to a satisfactory level), youre wrong 4. When you lose your compassion for others who are challenged in their reinvention or in their efforts to launch themselves successfully, youll suddenly experience something that brings you back to humility 5. Youll need faith, patience, and perseverance in greater supply than you ever thought possible 6. Its not all up to you things happen outside your sphere of influence that can shift your course 7. Reaching out for help is essential when youre not where you want to be 8. Being part of a like-minded community that offers support, guidance, and encouragement is a blessing and a good business strategy 9. Career reinventing is a life-long process (not a one-time deal), and once you embark on it, it changes you forever.   Its a process that leads you to feel so appreciative of all that you are flaws, gifts, strengths, blindspots and all and so excited for each new day that brings you closer to yourself. 10. Reinvention is not for the faint of heart, but oh myif youre up for it, what gifts it brings. What are the biggest mistakes youve made in reinventing your career?   Id love to hear.   Share your insights with us! We all learn from each other. Wishing you  a joyful  career reinvention!   And let me know if youd like some help Ive been there.
